Educational background
Dr. Dustin Curts earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics from the University of Guelph in 2007, developing a strong foundation in human physiology and performance. He went on to complete his Medical Doctorate at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2011, where he gained broad clinical training with a focus on serving diverse patient populations.
Dr. Curts then pursued his ophthalmology residency at the Ivey Eye Institute, University of Western Ontario — one of Canada’s premier ophthalmology training programs — earning his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in 2016.
Refractive experience
Dr. Curts has built an extensive surgical career centred on high-volume cataract surgery and comprehensive anterior segment care. Since 2016, he has operated his own private practice, Curts Ocular Surgery, where he performs a wide range of procedures including cataract surgery, laser treatments (YAG, SLT, Argon), oculoplastics, retina and intravitreal injections, and glaucoma management.
Concurrently, Dr. Curts serves as a staff surgeon at GBHS/Brightshores Hospital, providing cataract surgery and ocular emergency services to the community. He previously performed cataract and laser-assisted cataract surgery at Barrie Lasik from 2020 to 2022, further expanding his refractive and surgical expertise.
His surgical scope includes:
- High-volume cataract and laser-assisted cataract surgery
- Laser vision correction (YAG, SLT, Argon)
- Oculoplastics
- Retina and intravitreal injections
- Glaucoma management
Accomplishments and awards
Dr. Curts is an accomplished researcher and educator whose work has contributed meaningfully to the field of ophthalmology. He co-authored a chapter in Vaughan & Asbury’s General Ophthalmology (19th Edition, Chapter 20), a leading reference text used by ophthalmologists and trainees across North America.
His peer-reviewed research includes the publication “Evaluation of Canadian Undergraduate Ophthalmology Medical Education at Western University,” featured in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology (2016).
Dr. Curts has also served as a presenter at continuing education events for optometrists in Ontario, delivering sessions on:
