LASIK FAQs

LASIK eye surgery is a procedure that reshapes the cornea in order to treat refractive issues, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for glasses and contact lenses. During the procedure, an excimer laser gently reshapes the cornea with computer-controlled precision to correct issues, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

With laser vision surgery, complications are very rare. At TLC Laser Eye Centres, our doctors are some of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in the industry. Coupled with our experience and commitment to safety, we pride ourselves in using state-of-the-art technology to ensure the best post-operative results.

When making the decision to undergo LASIK eye surgery, be sure to do you research. Choose a LASIK surgeon who is experienced and well respected in the industry. Additionally, be sure to have a list of questions prepared to ask about the procedure when you attend your initial consult.

LASIK eye surgery itself is relatively quick. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes when performed on both eyes. The actual laser is used on average for less than 20 seconds per eye. The recovery is just as speedy, with most patients back to their normal routines within 24 hours.

LASIK is a relatively painless procedure, though you may experience some discomfort. In fact, many patients are surprised by how virtually painless their LASIK surgery is, both during and after the procedure.

Anesthetic drops are used to fully numb the eye before the LASIK eye surgery begins. Prior to the procedure, you may also be given a mild sedative to help you relax. During the procedure, it’s completely normal to experience a light sensation or pressure around your eye.

The price of your vision correction procedure will vary based on the type of technology recommended for your specific condition. For example, Custom LASIK is generally more expensive than its standard version because it utilizes the most advanced technology in the vision industry.

At TLC Laser Eye Centres, we’re committed to offering our patients better vision at an affordable price. This is why we offer a variety of special financing options and various corporate discounts. One of the benefits of LASIK eye surgery is its quick recovery time. There are some minimal restrictions in the first weeks following LASIK eye surgery, but most patients are able to resume their normal routine within 24-hours of their procedure. Further improvement may continue over several months. Your doctor will recommend avoiding certain activities for several weeks, such as swimming or contact sports.

Please note that the recovery time differs depending on the type of vision correction procedure you undergo. While most LASIK patients are back in action the following day, other types of laser eye surgeries may take longer. PRK patients, for instance, may take several days before they start feeling back to normal.

Yes! In fact, the majority of patients find it more convenient to have both eyes treated on the same day.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK eye surgery are both types of vision correction procedures with similar visual outcomes. They’re both equally effective and safe. But they have some key differences.

In LASIK, for instance, the surgeon will create a flap to reshape the cornea. But this isn’t necessary in PRK, which, instead, treats the surface of the eye by polishing the surface of the cornea. This is why PRK is often called “LASIK without a flap.” PRK is often recommended for individuals with thinner or softer corneas that wouldn’t be suitable for the creation of a corneal flap.
