Dr. Waleed Alsarhani

Dr. Waleed Alsarhani earned his MD with First Honors from King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences. He completed his ophthalmology residency training at the University of Toronto, where he served as Chief Resident in 2025. He is currently pursuing a clinical fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Toronto (2026–2028).

Dr. Alsarhani is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). He has successfully passed all International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) examinations and demonstrated exceptional academic proficiency by scoring in the 99th percentile on the American Academy of Ophthalmology-administered Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) exams in both 2023 and 2025.

Dr. Alsarhani specializes in the cornea and anterior segment, focusing on corneal, refractive, and cataract surgeries, as well as the management of external eye diseases. His fellowship at the University of Toronto provides advanced training in refractive techniques and corneal transplantation. His surgical expertise in this area is highlighted by the Kensington Eye Institute Resident Proficiency Award, which he received for top performance in cataract surgery during his residency.

His research includes numerous peer-reviewed publications on corneal and refractive conditions, specifically focusing on infectious keratitis, ocular antibiotic resistance, pterygium recurrence, and povidone-iodine treatments. Additionally, his work evaluates complex surgical outcomes, including keratolimbal allografts and corneal transplantation.

Dr. Alsarhani has received numerous academic and surgical honors throughout his medical training. He concluded his University of Toronto residency in 2026 by winning the Duncan Jamieson Memorial Prize and Woywitka Cup for the highest academic standing, alongside the Hurwitz-Vaile Sinai Health Award, recognizing the top surgical resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Kensington Eye Institute Resident Proficiency Award for excellence in cataract surgery. His other accolades include best resident awards at St. Michael's Hospital, the Michael Shea Award, and SickKids, the Chan Award for Excellence in Pediatric Ophthalmology. He also scored in the 99th percentile score on the 2023 and 2025 OKAP exams, received consecutive Resident of the Year awards from the Department of Ophthalmology at King Saud University, and ranked first among all final-year medical students applying to Saudi Commission for Health Specialties residency programs in Saudi Arabia in 2017.

An active researcher, Dr. Alsarhani has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in major journals, including Cornea, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. His published work covers corneal disease, glaucoma, uveitis, and retina. He has also presented his findings at prominent international meetings, such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), Euretina, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
