Dr. Clara Chan attended Stanford University in California for her undergraduate studies and received her medical degree from Queen’s University. She also attended the University of Toronto, where she completed her ophthalmology residency. Dr. Chan was selected from ophthalmologists around the world for a prestigious surgical fellowship in refractive surgery and corneal transplantation at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Dr. Chan has extensive experience in the latest refractive surgery techniques and in some of the most advanced treatments for keratoconus.
Dr Chan is a specialist in laser vision correction, and corneal and cataract surgeries. She is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, and previously served as chair of the residency surgical teaching committee for the university’s department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences. She is on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital and at Toronto Western Hospital, where she trains cornea-specialist surgeons from around the world to manage complicated cases and to perform challenging surgeries. She also is on-staff at the Kensington Eye Institute. Dr. Chan is the medical director of the Eye Bank of Canada’s Ontario division. She has also volunteered to provide surgical care to underprivileged patients in the Philippines as part of the St. Michael’s Hospital Urban Angels mission.
During Dr. Chan’s ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, her surgical expertise was recognized with awards for exceptional performance in cataract surgery by Mount Sinai Hospital and by the Kensington Eye Institute. She was also acknowledged with awards for clinical excellence from St. Michael’s Hospital and from the Hospital for Sick Children. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind recognized Dr. Chan as one of the top five ophthalmology residents in Canada and awarded her the E. A. Baker Scholarship to pursue post-doctoral fellowship studies. In 2015, she was awarded the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.
Dr Chan has published over 70 papers and abstracts and has presented at conferences and meetings around the world. She is a cornea section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and the cornea editor for EyeWorld magazine.
