ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)

Severe cases of nearsightedness that cannot be effectively treated with LASIK may be treated with an implantable contact lens (ICL). ICL placement is an effective alternative to LASIK eye surgery when the level of vision correction that a patient needs cannot be accomplished with a laser.

ICL Placement Procedure

Implantable contact lenses are similar to the intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are used in cataract surgery. However, unlike the process used in cataract surgery, the implantable contact lens is inserted without having to remove the eye’s natural lens. It corrects refractive error by adding additional focusing power to the eye without removing tissue which reduces the need for contacts and glasses.

Benefits of ICL Placement

An implantable contact lens can be used to correct the vision of patients who are poor candidates for laser surgery. The placement of an ICL is absolutely reversible; if necessary, the implanted lens can be removed at any time. Not everyone who suffers from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can be treated with a laser vision correction procedure such as LASIK or PRK. At TLC Laser Eye Centres, ICL (implantable contact lens) vision correction is available for our Canadian patients as an effective alternative to laser vision correction. Contact our practice today to learn more about ICL technology.
